Subject: LA-SIGMA kickoff meeting
To: lasigma@loni.org

Dear LA-SIGMA Colleagues,

Although we have yet to receive the official notice of the EPSCoR award,
as
you know we have received the unofficial notice from the program manager
that
our project will be fully funded. We
expect that the start date may be as early
as July 1, 2010 (retroactive), so we
need
to have a kickoff meeting as soon as
possible. Fortunately, a
meeting that Mike Khonsari was
hosting has been
canceled and we can use the reservations to gain access to Regent's facilities

afternoon of August 17 from 1:00-5:00 PM in the Claiborne Building, 1201
North Third
Street. So we propose to have the meeting on that date.Further
details will follow, including an itinerary.

Before the proposal was submitted we asked each of you
in an email sent on
10/10/09 to review the proposal and to be sure that you are comfortable
with
your role as described. We ask you to re-familiarize
yourselves
with your roles
in the science driver, computational, and
cyberinfrastructure teams.

http://www.phys.lsu.edu/~jarrell/EPSCoR/LA-SiGMA.pdf

This
grant is a cooperative agreement with NSF, with direct NSF involvement
at all stages, and annual reviews by an External Review Board.
Therefore, we
will be expected to hold ourselves accountable to
achieving the goals we have

set for ourselves. In
addition to the computational and science driver sections
directly
relevant to you, please also review the sections on
Diversity, External

Engagement, and Workforce
Development, and
Sustainability. In order for this
project to succeed, i.e., in order
to
bring about trans-formative changes to
materials science research
and
education in the State, all funded participants
will need to
contribute
to activities beyond research, including teaching, recruiting,
outreach, administration, etc.

We look
forward to seeing you on the 17th!

best regards,
